Adwords – How not to do it

Breaking from tradition, this blog post will actually be about something related to web design – shocked? – you should be.

I realised rather early on that having a ‘normal’ job wasn’t really for me. I briefly trained as an art teacher (lasted 2 days, the shocking state of the bacon caused me to leave) and then tried being a designer in a few trendy design companies…it didn’t really fit for me (I went for my lunch break and didn’t return – I hope they aren’t expecting me back)

Curlykale was born.

So there I sat being a web designer. There was something missing…work.

Having to market my own business had never really occurred to me as I drove fast away from a fairly decent design job.

Popping a note in the post office and church noticeboard wasn’t going to cut this one. I turned to google adwords. I’m sure you are familiar with adwords, if not, have a peak here. I set my adverts up, popped in a few web design keywords, gave google my credit card details and left it there.

(you can probably see where this is going)

I got a call! My first client, I drove down to meet her and we cracked right on, it took about a month to build the site, Curlykale was officially sailing the design seas.

…My credit card bill came.

In the space of a month I had managed to pay for a whole new wing of Google HQ. Do you see their trendy offices on TV or in the news from time to time?

Do you see that TV on the wall? – I probably paid for that in my first month.

I learnt a lesson that day. I was doing pritty much everything wrong, not choosing a geographical region, choosing rather vague keywords, and worst of all… just leaving it to it!

If you’re looking at getting your site on that mighty first page of google right away with adwords, please do have a good read up first! This excellent article will steer you clear of paying for another pool table for google HQ

I now enjoy a much better quality of bacon, still not maple cured, still not from my own butcher…we need to work a bit harder to achieve those soaring levels of bacon purity.

Have a lovely day, whatever day it may be that you read this :-)
